Reading fiction is at the heart of our classrooms.

It’s what we love. It’s what we want our students to love—whether whole class novels, book club texts, or independent choices. But to love fiction, kids need to be able to and hopefully want to read without our constant guidance and instruction. How can we coach students towards more proficient, independent practice when they read?

Kate Roberts offers strategies to teach the skills students need to confidently analyze character, theme, and craft—strategies they can repeatedly practice across time and texts. Since reading strategies alone don’t help teachers or students understand the “why” and “how,” each strategy is anchored by:

Whatever your reason, we hope you will bring your units to our Curriculum Clinics. Join us for a bit of whole group learning followed by your choice of workshops that will help you to:

Make sure your unit has a clear, well-defined focus that you can easily assess.
Spend time deeply learning how to coach into and problem for that focus.
Create toolkits to take the burden of responsive teaching off of your mind in class.
Look at your data in replicable, sustainable, useful ways.
Consider all of your students as you plan.

During this time, Kate and Maggie will be available as your help desk for the resources, ideas, or troubleshooting you might need.
